precautionarytales.net/2003_08_24_archive.shtml Children eat crap – it’s official. The survey of nine- to 11-year-olds suggests two out of three children regularly discard fruit, and one in three regularly throw away sandwiches. However, only one in five admitted to throwing away crisps or biscuits. And it’s all down to peer pressure. Healthy stuff just ain’t cool, apparently. Dr Ian Campbell of the National Obesity Forum said, ‘Even if children are given healthy snacks in their lunches they will sometimes not eat them because they fear they will be ridiculed by their friends.’ Red wine, olive oil and old age: A report in the New York Times suggests that red wine may contain a chemical that extends lifespan. Meanwhile, another group claim to have found a chemical with a similar effect in olive oil.

The cause of this discrepancy has been debated. The weakest factor in this list of possibilities is that of genetic predisposition. Two thirds of all cancers are related to diet. Associations between the two are difficult, if not impossible, to prove because of the formidable number of variables involved. Problems with the American diet are being increasingly appreciated because of the epidemic of obesity. Meats and poultry obtained from animals that have been fattened up on hormones or chemically preserved foods may be factors that contribute to the early onset of puberty in girls, and increasing incidence of chronic diseases like diabetes and cancer.

That protective effect for Indians may be provided by their diet which is rich in spices. Garlic, onion, soy, turmeric, ginger, tomatoes, green tea and chillies that are the staples of Indian cooking have been shown to be associated with a lower risk of a variety of cancers ranging from colon, GI tract, breast, leukemias and lymphomas. The benefits of spices have been known for millennia. Spices have been used for ages as food preservatives. Spices kill germs, and are therefore highly effective as preservatives.

surgiblog.blogspot.com/2007/02/cancer-statistics-2007.html Every year, the American Cancer Society publishes a paper reviewing updates to US cancer incidence and mortality rates, as well as estimated projections, using data obtained from cancer registries and SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results… a program of the NCI).

…The dietary pattern most frequently associated with increased risk of colorectal cancer have several characteristics: rich in total fat, rich in total or animal protein, rich in meat products, a high proportion of saturated fats, low in fruits and vegetables, and low in plant sources of fiber. A sedentary lifestyle with little physical activity is emerging as one of the strongest lifestyle factors associated with increased risk of colon cancer. In addition, excessive caloric intake and obesity have been implicated in some, but not all, studies…
